If you are about to write WAEC, you may wonder if Yoruba is a compulsory subject. The answer is NO. Even for an Art student, you are not expected to register Yoruba subject in your WAEC except you want to study a course that is related to Yoruba. For example

  • Yoruba and Communication Arts
  • Yoruba Education
  • Yoruba
  • Arabic/Yoruba
  • Music/Yoruba
  • Hausa/Yoruba

If you are not studying any of the above courses, then, Yoruba is not a compulsory subject and for this reason, do not register it during WAEC registration. Replace Yoruba with another subject or omit it completely. It is not a must that you write 9 subjects.

Please take note, If you are going to choose any of the institutions below, Yoruba is compulsory for all courses.
Lagos State University, Lagos State Polytechnic, Michael Otedola College of Primary Education, Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Lagos State School of Nursing and Lagos State College of Health Technology, among others must have credit in the Yoruba language

Why?
Through The Yoruba Language Preservation and Promotion Law, the Lagos State Government has made it mandatory for all candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions in Lagos to have a credit in Yoruba Language. Source

  1. Can I study English and literature without Yoruba in my WASSSCE particularly in Unilag
If no, what are the other best universities that would take my result in that way
