WAEC subject combination (requirements) for Languages and Linguistics

You’re expected to have at least 5 credits on the required WAEC subject combination needed to study Languages and Linguistics in Nigeria universities. These subjects combination are also applicable to other O’level exams such as NECO AND GCE. The required WAEC subject combination (O level requirement) for Languages and Linguistics must include:

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is a body responsible for your admission into the University or other institutions. Direct Entry requirement (required A-level result) to study Languages and Linguistics

If you’re one of those seeking admission into the University to further your studies, in addition to the required WAEC subjects combination for Languages and Linguistics, you are expected to have Two ‘A’ level passes in Arts Social Science and Science subjects.

In Nigeria, if you gain admission to study Languages and Linguistics degree course at the university through JAMB UTME, you will study Languages and Linguistics for four years. If you gain admission through direct entry, you will study this course for three years. And of course there is room for more years if you have extension; the aftermath of carryover courses.

According to JAMB, a body responsible for your admission into the University or other institutions, Languages and Linguistics is under the Faculty/School/College of Art but may be under a different faculty in some universities in Nigeria.

Can a science or commercial student study Languages and Linguistics?

Yes! If you are a science or a commercial student, you can study Languages and Linguistics at the university provided you have the required subjects combination in your O level result. If you’re still in secondary school, you may find it difficult to change subjects to fit your desired course during WAEC registration because some schools may go against it.

Also, during WAEC or NECO registration make sure you know which subjects are been registered for you because some secondary schools are ignorant about the importance of O level requirements for university courses. Another alternative way to register the required subject combinations for Languages and Linguistics is through GCE.

What is Direct Entry Special Consideration (waiver) to study Languages and Linguistics
(i) Benue State University, Makurdi requires Five SSCE credit to include Lit. in English. one Arts and one other Arts or Social Science subject.
(ii) Benue State University, Makurdi accepts TC II merit level pass in lieu of ‘O’ level credit in English Language.
(iii) Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK) requires five ‘O’ level credit in Arts, Social Sciences and one Nigerian Language.
(iv) University of Calabar (UNICAL) – Knowledge of French, German or Spanish would be as advantage.
(v) University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) accepts two ‘A’ level passes at C grade, NCE at merit level, Diploma in Igbo, OND in linguistics and language studies, Igbo, in at least merit level passes. In all cases credit level pass in English Language is compulsory.

What is WAEC, NECO, GCE, Special Consideration (waiver) to study Languages and Linguistics
(i) Benue State University, Makurdi requires Literature in English and any other subjects from Arts or Social Sciences.
(ii) University of Port-Harcourt (UNIPORT) – Other subjects are the same as in English Language.
(iii) University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) requires at least Igbo or any other Nigerian Language.
(iv) University of Ibadan (UI) requires at least two Arts and any other two subjects. A credit in African Language will be an advantage.
