Sociology Course description:
From research, we know that sociology is one of the competitive course in Nigeria. Sociology is an analytic discipline concerned with understanding people as creators of, and participants in, society. That is, the analytical study of human groups and societies— how they develop, how they are structured, and how they function. Like human society itself, the field of sociology is extremely broad. The field is broadly concerned with the study of modern society and its social organizations, institutions, groups, and social roles.
Sociologists study social influences on human behaviours, such as sexuality, ethnic identity, and religious belief, and how individuals become members of families and communities. In other word, Sociologists study the social world, from small groups of friends and families to formal organizations, such as universities and corporations, to entire nations
The field is also concerned with social problems, especially all forms of prejudice, discrimination, and inequality, and with poverty, crime, violence, and the threatened environment. Sociologists emphasize sources of social problems in the organization of society, public policies for their alleviation, and today’s questions of social justice.
Finally, they study how individuals, both alone and working in groups, can change the society in which they live, their social relationships and interactions, at power and conflict, at the structures that hold societies together, and at how those societies change. A degree in sociology opens many doors for careers and is an excellent background for advanced training in a variety of other fields.
With Sociology degree, you will have a foundation for better understanding and engaging with the globalizing world. You will be equipped with the tools needed to make sense of the shifting social world and contribute solutions to difficult social problems

Can a science or art student study Sociology?
Yes! If you are a Science, Commercial or an Art student, you can study Sociology at the university provided you have the required subjects combination in your O level result. If you’re still in secondary school, you may find it difficult to change subjects to fit your desired course during WAEC registration because some schools may go against it.
Also, during WAEC or NECO registration make sure you know which subjects are been registered for you because some secondary schools are ignorant about the importance of O level requirements for university courses. Another alternative way to register the required subject combinations for Sociology is through GCE.
Now I am confident that you know the compulsory subjects needed to study Sociology in WAEC. But note this — Some Universities may accept D7 or E8 in some a compulsory subject instead of Credit. And some may accept or reject two sittings. That is combinations of WAEC, NECO, or GCE results.
