Law Course Description

The academic study of law in Nigeria will give you an insight into the legal systems on which much of our day-to-day life is based. You will gain a broad and thorough understanding of the subject. You will practise, practise and practise some more the skills of thinking, analysis, and written and verbal presentation of ideas of arguments. The skills are necessary to practice Law but make great transferable skills for many other career paths, such as teaching, the civil service, and the voluntary sector.

A degree in Law aims at producing a law graduate with a level of education to serve as a legal adviser to the governments of the day, their agencies, companies, business firms etc. by introducing you to the process of legal development and equipping you with the basic tools of legal analysis or legal method.

A Law degree is never for the weak. I believe you’re here to know what subject to write to become a lawyer. Well, to know the WAEC or Jamb subject combination for Law is never a good way to make a decision, so I felt I should write a brief introduction to the almighty degree called Law

Benefits of studying Law degree course:

  • A Law degree will provide you with the skills required to practice in law, for example through mooting (a mock legal hearing where students argue points of law), and pro bono work. Depending on the course, you may study law in relation to specific areas, such as family, commerce, or finance.
  • As a law graduate, there are plenty of job roles you can explore. Law graduates can be found working as barristers, paralegals, or solicitors. Law experts are also needed in police forces around the world, or among the finance, media, or political sectors.
  • Alongside developing key subject knowledge throughout a law degree, you will also gain skills that can be used across your professional and personal life:
    • Written and spoken English skills
    • Collaboration, teamwork, and project management
    • Analysis, research, and attention to detail

Can a science or art student study Law?

Yes! If you are a Science, Commercial or an Art student, you can study Law at the university provided you have the required subjects combined in your O level result. If you’re still in secondary school, you may find it difficult to change subjects to fit your desired course during WAEC registration because some schools may go against it.

Also, during WAEC or NECO registration make sure you know which subjects are been registered for you because some secondary schools are ignorant about the importance of O level requirements for university courses. Another alternative way to register the required subject combinations for Law is through GCE.

Is Law an art or social science subject?

Many students ask this question… If Law is a science, art or social science subject. Right now, I’ll give you a straight answer. The study of law crosses the boundaries between the social sciences and Art/humanities, depending on one’s view of research into its objectives and effect. Law course is studied under the faculty of Law in most Nigeria Universities while some may be studied entirely in a different Faculty.
