International student GPA to US 4.00 Scale conversion

For any international student who wants to study abroad especially in the United States, it is expedient that you convert your GPA to 4.00 US Scale in advance. This would allow you to know if you meet the GPA requirement of the school you wish to gain admission. Click on the link to know how to calculate your local school GPA.

Let it be known that although the 4.00 scale is the most popular grading system in the United States, there are other forms which different schools adopted. So, if you want to convert your GPA to 4.00 US Scale, please ensure that you had verified the school make use of 4.00. I know schools with 5.00, 10.00 etc though not as popular as 4.00 scale.

On this post, I’m going to teach you how to convert GPA to 4.00 US Scale. This conversion is not limited to any country. Whether you’re from Nigeria, Kenya, India, Australia, Libya etc. The conversion is the same though the grading may differ. How do I mean? The same way to convert GPA to US 4.00, is all the same way you convert GPA to US 5.00.

Remember I told you to make sure you know what GPA scale is been used by the international university you choose to study. The wrong GPA may give you the wrong result which may affect admission.

Conversion is easy. I mean very easy. There are some companies that convert GPA to US scale for a fee. You can use their services but if you do not have that luxury, then you should learn how to convert yourself.

Things you need to convert GPA to 4.00 US Scale.

  • International university’s GPA scale
  • Your transcript.

If you don’t have your transcript available, you could make use of your personal exams records if you have one. But transcript is preferable since it’s official. You’re also required to send a transcript and not personal records.

The scale above is the most common GPA conversion scale used by universities in the United States. Some universities use 1.67 in place of 1.7 and 1.33 in place 1.3, but this difference does not significantly affect the resulting GPA. For a few schools, anything below 65 is 0. A+ is sometimes converted to 4.3 (or 4.33) points, but many universities do not have an A+.

Now, I want to convert this 5.00 GPA to US 4.00 GPA. The data I need from the table is examination score or percentage and Units also called Credits. The next step is to look at each score in my table and assign the corresponding Scale from the US Scale above.

For example, in my result, 85 is A but if I should use the conversion above, 85 is B

    Thanks for the Calculator it’s very helpful. But for the conversion it would require that you have the record of the exact score earned for the various courses. Sadly not all official transcripts provide these scores, my school transcript only showed the grades with the course credit and no score for the grade gotten. How do i proceed with such a handicap in getting the conversion done
