WAEC subject combination (requirements) for Food Technology

You’re expected to have at least 5 credits on the required WAEC subject combination needed to study Food Technology in Nigeria polytechnics. This subject combination is also applicable to other O’level exams such as NECO AND GCE. The required WAEC subject combination (O level requirement) for Food Technology must include:
Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology/Agricultural Science/Health Science and any two of the following: Physics, Technical Drawing, Economics/Commerce, English Language, Additional/Further Mathematics, Home Economics, Food and Nutrition, Geography plus at least credit passes in Physics and English Language.
These listed subjects are compulsory for anyone writing WAEC and other O level examinations. I will advise you to include a Language in your O level subjects. For the record, if you are one of those students seeking admission into any polytechnics in Lagos State, Yoruba Language is compulsory for Food Technology. So now that you know the compulsory O level subject requirement to study Food Technology, let also look at JAMB UTME and Direct requirements.
 

JAMB UTME subject combination (requirements) for Food Technology

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is a body responsible for your admission into the University or other institutions. Now I’m going to show you the compulsory JAMB subjects for Food Technology that you must register (English must be included because it is compulsory even though it may not be listed among the JAMB subjects below), and I will honestly advise you to aim for a score of 150 so that you can easily gain admission into any Polytechnics. Please note– English Language is compulsory. If Mathematics is not listed among the Jamb subject on this post, then Mathematics is not compulsory for this course. JAMB is not the only option to gain admission into Nigerian Universities to study Food Technology. Can a commercial or art student study Food Technology?

No! If you are a Commercial or an Art student, you cannot study study Food Technology at the polytechnic because it is a pure science course which need a good background in science subjects. To avoid discouragement, you can go for this course if you wish provided you have the required subjects combination in your O level result. If you’re still in secondary school, you may find it difficult to change subjects to fit your desired course during WAEC registration because some schools may go against it.

Special Consideration

Now I am confident that you know the compulsory subjects needed to study Food Technology in polytechnics. But note this — Some Polytechnics may accept D7 or E8 in some a compulsory subject instead of Credit. And some may accept or reject two sittings. That is combinations of WAEC, NECO, or GCE results. You will know more when you take a look at the special consideration (waiver) for Food Technology below if available.
 
Polytechnic Special Consideration/waiver for Food Technology
a) The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State (The Polytechnic, Ibadan), GIWAPOLY, Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, Osun State Polytechnic, Iree and Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu (LASPOTECH) require credit in Mathematics.
b) The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State (The Polytechnic, Ibadan) requires 5 credits at not more than two sittings including Mathematics and at least a pass in Physics.
c) Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State requires a credit pass in Mathematics and at least a pass in Physics. d) The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State (The Polytechnic, Ibadan) and FEDPOOsun State College of Education, Ila-Orangun, Osun State. does not accept Economics as UTME subject.
e) FEDPODAM offers it as Food Science and Technology.
g) FEDPOFFA accepts at least a pass in Eng. Lang. and Physics.
h) Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechic, Unwana requires five credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science and any one of the following; Physics, Additional Mathematics, Economics, Food Nutrition, Statistics and at least a pass in Physics. Also does not accept Economics as UTME subject. i) The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State (The Polytechnic, Ibadan) requires Chemistry as one of the UTME subjects.
j) Federal Polytechnic, Anambra State. requires a credit in Mathematics, English Language Statistics, Further Mathematics, Food and Nutrition/Hotel Catering, Basic electricity, Geography
(k) FEDPO-Nek and Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Ondo State. (RUGIPO) require at least a pass in English Language and Physics.
(l) FCAT–Saadatu Rimi College of Education, Kumbotso (a) accept Candidates who have successfully completed NBTE recognized PreNational Diploma (Science and Technology) course at credit level may be admitted into the programme. Such students must have at least pass grades in Agricultural Science, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and one other subject chosen from Physics, Economics, Food and Nutrition, Geography in WASC or GCE ‘O’ level before undertaking the course. (b) do not accept the combination of two different examination bodies at SSCE O’ level (it is either NECO – NECO or WAEC – WAEC).
m) Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi accepts chem., Bio, Mathematics and any one of the following; Physics, Economics, Geography.
n) Osun State Polytechnic, Iree requires credit passes in two basic Sciences, Geography, Economics/Commerce. It accepts credit in Animal Husbandry/Food Nutrition.
o) Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo, Imo State accepts five credits from SSCE/GCE i/c subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology/Agric. Science/Health Science and any one from the following: Biology/Health Science/ Agric. Sci, Physics, Economics/Commerce, Additional/Further Maths, Home Econs, Food and Nutrition, Geography. A pass in Physics is accepted.
p) Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) requires five credits in not more than two sittings to include credit in Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology/Agricultural Science with a minimum of pass in Physics and English Language. q) Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro accepts a pass in Physics.
r) Fidei Polytechnic, Benue State accepts five credits from SSCIE/GCE subjects. The subjects are to include, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology/Agric. Science/Health Science, Economics/Commerce, Additional/Further Maths, Statistics, Home Economics, Food and Nutrition/ Hotel Catering and Geography. A pass in English and Physics is accepted.
s) Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, Lagos State (YABATECH) requires five credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science and any one of the following; Physics, Additional Mathematics, Economics, Food Nutrition.
U.T.M.E. SUBJECTS:
i) Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu State (IMT-ENU) requires Biology.
ii) Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, Lagos State (YABATECH) requires Mathematics, Biology/Agric. Science and any one of Physics, Chemistry, Economics
